YATES and SETH BORENSTEIN

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now — especially when it comes to children.

'Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later,' Herberman said."

Renewed worries over cell phone risks

Renewed worries over cell phone risks

This video features Devra Davis, Ph.D., MPH, and Director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, and professor, Department of Epidemiology, Graduate School of Public Health.

She has recently authored a book ‘The Secret History of the War on Cancer.’

New Zealand - While wireless spectrum is a highly technical issue that makes most people's eyes glaze over, it is extremely important to Canada's future prosperity.

What is spectrum?
Spectrum is a catch-all term for the radio airwaves that many wireless gizmos use to communicate information. Radios use spectrum, as do the rabbit-ear antennas on older television sets. The CBC, for example, is broadcast free to many parts of Canada using a part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Cellphones, of course, also use it.
Spectrum is divided into different frequencies and measured in units called hertz.

Cellphone market poised for shakeup as spectrum auction ends

Cellphone market poised for shakeup as spectrum auction ends:

"The government is $4.2 billion richer Becker, a towering figure in bioelectromagnetics, died on May 14 due to complications from pneumonia. He was 84 and had been ailing for some time. Becker, best known for his research on "currents of injury" and the role they plan in regeneration, made significant contributions to many areas of electrobiology. He was later drawn into public controversies over health effects — Becker is credited as the first to use the term "electromagnetic pollution"— and in the end paid dearly for speaking out.

"Bob Becker's passing marks the end of an era in bioelectromagnetics, that time when very few scientists believed that non-thermal electromagnetic exposures were biologically significant," said Abe Liboff, a physicist and the co-editor of Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://emr-safety.blogspot.com/2008/05/robert-o-becker-1923-2008.html' title='ROBERT O. We can't save those who would rather die than switch. But ethics compelled us to ensure that all reasonable people have access to the basic scientific facts.

Your cell phone is a microwave transmitter and it should bear a cancer warning! Microwave energy oscillates at millions to billions of cycles per second. The Journal of Cellular Biochemistry reports that these frequencies cause cancer and other diseases by interfering with cellular DNA and its repair mechanisms. Microwave promotes rapid cell aging. Though low power, the pico cell creates a network area big enough to encompass the cabin of the plane.

The base station routes phone traffic to and from the plane to an orbiting satellite that connects to mobile networks on the ground. Meanwhile, a network control unit on the plane is used to ensure that mobile phones in the plane do not connect to any base stations on the ground."

BBC NEWS | Technology | Europe clears mobiles on aircraft

BBC NEWS | Technology | Europe clears mobiles on aircraft:

"Europe clears mobiles on aircraft Aircraft cabin Mobile phone use is currently banned onboard aircraft

Mobile phone calls will be allowed on planes flying in European airspace under new European Commission rules.

The decision means that mobiles could be used once a plane has reached an altitude of 3,000m or more."

Orange to remove mobile mast from 'tower of doom'

Orange to remove mobile mast from 'tower of doom', where cancer rate has soared| News | This is London:
"Orange to remove mobile mast from 'tower of doom', where cancer rate has soared" A mobile phone company is to remove a mast from a block of flats after seven residents were struck down by cancer.
Three have died and another four have battled the disease since two masts were erected on the roof of the five-storey block which has become known locally as the Tower of Doom.

The cancer rate on the top floor - where residents of five of the eight flats have been affected and the three who died all lived - is 20 per cent, ten times the national average.

Residents of Berkeley House in Staple Hill, Bristol, also complain of terrible headaches and other ailments which they blame on radiation from the masts."

Irish Doctors' Environmental Association Position on Electro-Magnetic Radiation

IDEA Position on Electro-Magnetic Radiation:
"The Irish Doctors' Environmental Association believes that a sub-group of the population are particularly sensitive to exposure to different types of electro-magnetic radiation. The safe levels currently advised for exposure to this non-ionising radiation are based solely on its thermal effects. However, it is clear that this radiation also has non-thermal effects, which need to be taken into consideration when setting these safe levels. Blake Levitt, Harcourt Brace & Company, ©1995

"If our everyday existence is impossible to imagine without electricity, then it is also impossible to imagine without electromagnetic fields. But recent legal judgements confirm what some environmental activists have long said: those ubiquitous fields can pose a serious challenge to our health, housing values, and community development plans. This eye-opening book -- the most comprehensive resource available to consumers today -- explains why and where electromagnetic fields (EMFs) occur, which illnesses may have a strong connection to them, and how your Doctor's knowledge may be limited.

In a frank, balanced, and accessible manner, science writer B. Blake Levitt sorts through the complex social and medical issues. From high tension lines to radio towers, consumer products to government regulations, she explores our ever-increasing electromagnetic environment and shows us what we can do to live more safely within it. This is essential reading for community planners and all those concerned with personal and family health and well-being.

As significant for Americans in the 1990's as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was in the 1960's."

Cellular Towers: A Medical Issue by B Blake Levitt

Cellular Towers: A Medical Issue by B Blake Levitt:
"The majority of calls I receive are from extremely distraught people who have suddenly found out that a cellular tower is going up near their homes or on their children's school property. Actually it is a very integral part of our lives because without this electromagnetic energy life would not be possible.

What is the problem we seem to have with electromagnetic radiation?

Well, since time began until about hundred years ago life had to deal with naturally occurring radiation, which somehow was balanced or life was shielded from detrimental parts of that radiation such as certain cosmic radiation. When people started to harness electricity and began to generate and transport it over long distances a different kind of energy was introduced to our life: AC electric, AC magnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation.

Over time, industry found newer and more exciting usage of that energy. It started with simple motors, refrigerators, doorbells, electric blankets, etc., via electric heating systems, communication systems such as radio and television, and is now engaged in sophisticated electronic devices, including military weapon systems, satellites, computers and cell phone technology.

These manmade energies have become part of our lives and as such are superimposed to our subtle body energies. The result of this development seems to be an increase in certain illnesses that have been unknown"

Eco Friendly Building Bau-Biologie Natural Healthy Building Certification Programs Courses Seminars

Eco Friendly Building Bau-Biologie Natural Healthy Building Certification Programs Courses Seminars:

"A one day seminar on the medical issues of High Frequency.

Dr. Carlo is a medical scientist, lawyer, and the founder of the Science and Public Policy Institute. Minimize all exposure and usage of wireless communication: cell phones, cordless phones, and WiFi devices.

2. Turn cell phone off when not in use and sleeping. Never keep it near your head or use it to play games, movies, etc.

3. Keep cell phone at least 6-7 inches away from your body and others while on, talking, texting and downloading.

4. Use air tube headsets or speaker mode when talking. Wireless and wired headsets still conduct radiation!

5. Never keep cell phone in pocket, purse, back or on hip all day. The hip produces 80% of the body’s red blood cells and is especially vulnerable to EMR damage. -Close proximity may also affect fertility.

6. Do not talk on cell or cordless phone when pregnant, with a baby/small child in arms, under age 16, or while in a vehicle (car, train, plane, subway) –Radiation gets trapped and is higher in these closed metal zones! Our main purpose is to derive accurate estimates of the magnitude of this problem.
SCRAM www.scram.uk.com was set up in 2003 by Eileen O'Connor and Lynn Insley; who attributed their illnesses to a mobile phone mast in the small village of Wishaw. They did a survey of the village and were horrified to find a very high proportion of cancer and other biologically related illnesses.

With the aid of the Internet they were able to contact other groups with the same concerns about these masts. At first, many of the military initiatives and scientific research projects described by Dr. Begich sound like science fiction — the stuff of Philip K. Dick’s most paranoid visions — but they are quite real, and in many cases already available. A huge trove of documents, articles and public testimonies assembled by Begich’s team can be found at the website of The Lay Institute.

Confronted with this information, I was shocked at first, and wondered why it is almost never discussed in the media or public sphere. My next reaction was to want to run away from thinking about it ever again. Becker and Andrew A. Marino

The relationship between electromagnetism and life has been a source of fascination and controversy for more than 400 years. Today, interest in all facets of this relationship is at an unprecedented pitch. The body's intrinsic electromagnetic phenomena have been rediscovered, and the evidence suggests that, far from being unimportant by-products of biochemical activity as previously believed, they play a vital role in diverse physiological processes. The earth has a natural electromagnetic background, produced by the earth itself and by cosmic sources, and the age-old question as to whether this background can be detected by living organisms has now been answered in the affirmativethe earth's electromagnetic background is an important environmental factor for all living things. Clinical uses of electromagnetic energy are increasing and promise to expand into important areas in the near future.

But the coin has another side. The environment is now thoroughly polluted by man-made sources of electromagnetic radiation with frequencies and magnitudes never before present. Man's activities have probably changed the earth's electromagnetic background to a greater degree than they have changed any other natural physical attribute of the earthwhether the land, water, or atmosphere. The evidence now indicates that the present abnormal electromagnetic environment can constitute a health risk.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://emr-safety.blogspot.com/2008/02/table-of-contents.html' title='Electromagnetism & An international working group of scientists, researchers and public health policy professionals (The BioInitiative Working Group) has released its report on electromagnetic fields (EMF) and health.

They document serious scientific concerns about current limits regulating how much EMF is allowable from power lines, cell phones, and many other sources of EMF exposure in daily life. The report concludes the existing standards for public safety are inadequate to protect public health.

Click here to view video interview with Cindy Sage on The BioInitiave Report

International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety

"Benevento Resolution"
The International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (ICEMS) held an international conference entitled “The Precautionary EMF Approach: Rationale, Legislation and Implementation”, hosted by the City of Benevento, Italy.

The scientists at the conference endorsed and extended the 2002 Catania Resolution and resolved that: "More evidence has accumulated suggesting that there are adverse health effects from occupational and public exposures to electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields, or EMF, at current exposure levels.
